Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – The Downfall of Dot Mobi?
It seems from many reports and views that the promise of the Dot-Mobi domain name has dwindled away in the face of new products such as the iPhone. As one pundit states; “DotMobi the top-level domain for mobile Internet sites, lived a brief (and not particularly productive) life.” (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3630696)
The .mobi domain name was developed specifically to meet the needs of the mobile browsing market. Essentially, .mobi or DotMobi is a top-level domain approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and managed by the mTLD global registry. The domain is intended for the delivery of Internet to mobile devices and is financially backed by Google, Microsoft, Nokia, and many other organizations. The DotMobi domain names were opened for public registration on September 26, 2006 and attracted public with numerous six-figure domain sales. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mobi)
The main difference between DotMobi and other domains is that it is specifically designed to optimize Web content for mobile devices with the intention of creating a site that is attractive and presentable on many mobile devices and cell phones and which functions and operates well in the mobile environment. There was considerable enthusiasm about this new domain as it guaranteed that a website would display well over a mobile device and this was seen as an important move in the light of dramatic increase in mobile usage throughout the world, and especially in 2008.
The Reasons
The reason given for the demise of this domain name is essentially that it has lost its significant in the face of the popularity of new technologies and devices like the iPhone. The iPhone is seen by many pundits as a significant “game changer” in the industry, as it makes use of Apple’s Safari browser rather than a proprietary mobile platform. In other words, the need for a specific domain name that is suited to the mobile browser is simply no longer necessary in the light of the wide use of the iPhone and Safari. Donna Pawar, Co-Founder of Yojo Mobile, succinctly summarizes the present state of affairs; “Having a special domain extension exclusively for mobile devices is not really needed anymore given today’s next generation devices like the iPhone…” (http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/018004.html)
Statistics underscore the growing irrelevance of the DotMobi domain name:
84.8% of the iPhone users and 58.2% of total smart phone users access news and information from the hand?held device. 58.6% of iPhone users and 37% of smart phone users visited a search engine on their phones. 30.9% of iPhone users have tuned into mobile TV or a video clip from their phone. 74.1% of iPhone users and 27.9% of smart phone users listen to music on their mobile devices. (Source: mMetrics)(http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/018004.html)
Pundits also refer to the impact of new sophisticated browsers with built?in Flash. One of these is the Skyfire. Skyfire is able to transcode ordinary HTML pages on the fly and present them as mobile ready on various mobile platforms. Furthermore, this product is freely downloadable and claims to “…make browsing on your phone exactly like browsing on your PC with unprecedented speed and simplicity.” (http://www.skyfire.com/product) The advent of this browser has been seen as another nail in the coffin of .mobi and largely does away with the need to design Websites for mobile devices. Skyfire is currently in beta testing. This is the first browser software for Windows Mobile 5 and 6 which allows viewing of inline Flash animation and streaming video.
What does this mean for the mobile developer and domainer? In fact it means very little and many see this as a very positive development as there is no longer any real need for “jumping through too many additional development, architectural and duplicate content issues.” (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3630696) It also mean that it is no longer is it necessary to create two separate Web sites anymore, one for mobile users, and one for PC.
Those who are disappointed by this development are obviously those who have already invested in the DotMobi domain. As one expert notes; “ It’s unlikely they’ll see a return on that gamble…” At present there are reports of hundred of investors dumping their domains in the hope that they can salvage something before they are worthless. “ Not since “Black Tuesday” of the depression has such a mass unloading of assets occurred. “ (http://www.mobideath.com/)
On the other hand there are some pundits with do not agree with the positive prognostications about the death of DotMObi. They see intrinsic value in the .mobi name. “…any other extension can be used for these mobile compatible sites but the TLD of choice will be .mobi because it’s like the label that tells you what’s in the tin… a trustmark…” (http://www.product-reviews.net/2007/11/28/umpc-failure-mobi-means-mobile-internet-and-mobile-site/)
However, there seems to be little doubt that the perception is increasing that the DotMobi domain name is losing its importance mainly because translating conventional Websites into a mobile format has become unnecessary with the advent of the iPhone and new browsers like Skyfire.
